''Japonoconger caribbeus'' is an eel in the family Congridae (conger/garden eels).〔(''Japonoconger caribbeus'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 It was described by David G. Smith and Robert H. Kanazawa, 1977 (4036 ) ''Eight new species and a new genus of congrid eels from the western north Atlantic with redescriptions of Ariosoma analis, Hildebrandia guppyi, and Rhechias vicinalis.'' Bulletin of Marine Science v. 27 (no. 3): 530-543.〕 It is a marine, deep water-dwelling eel which is known only from the Caribbean Sea (off the coast of Colombia and Venezuela, from which its species epithet is derived), in the western central Atlantic Ocean.
